A nationally significant archaeological monument and one of the highest and largest hillforts in Latgale. The hillfort rises to 143 metres above sea level and is located on the right bank of the Ludza River, opposite Eversmuiža.
The site was described by Latvian archaeologist Ernests Brastiņš in 1928. Its slopes are very steep, particularly on the northern side. On the southern side, two terraces, three ramparts and three defensive ditches can still be distinguished. The hillfort was established at the western end of an elongated ridge. Its plateau is approximately 100 metres long and 30 metres wide, with a rectangular outer bailey measuring around 10–12 metres in width.
The hillfort takes its name, Kapu kalns (“Cemetery Hill”), from a cemetery that once occupied the summit. Today, the hill is covered with forest.
At the foot of the hill is an open-air stage where various local events are held. It is also a popular gathering place for celebrating Līgo, the traditional Latvian Midsummer festival.
Several notable old pine trees can also be found in the surrounding area.
