The 169 km long regional cycle route no. 34 “Rypoj vasals” leads through the Northern Latgale region and will surprise travelers with its hospitality, sincerity and endlessly beautiful nature! Every place has its own history and special aura – church, a manor or a farmestead. Driving along the route, you can enjoy the beautiful rural landscapes where the sky merges with the grain fields, enjoy the shade provided by the forest on the hot summer days, as well as the presence of local traditions. In the section from Viļaka to Kārsava the route takes you close to the Latvian-Russian border which is also the external eastern border of the European Union, so don’t forget to bring your identity document.
Surface: There are almost no specially built bicycle paths, so the cyclist as a road user mostly rides on asphalted roads, but will also have to ride on dusty gravel surfaces. The optimal cycling season for the route lasts from May to September. In other months, the route can also be traveled by car.
The order of the route: Balvi – Viļaka – Rekova – Baltinava- Kārsava – Malnava – Salnava – Tilža – Lazdukalns – Rugāji.
