The Zilupe Ancient Valley, with its distinctive landscape, river and lakes, resembles a miniature portrait of Latgale. It begins on the outskirts of the town of Zilupe and stretches past Zaļesje Manor as far as Duboviki.
The Grīva River flows through the valley, which is also home to Lake Zaļesje and Lake Sovāni. Two ancient Latgalian hillforts are located here – Naumki Hillfort, also known as Šibeņica, and Duboviki Hillfort.
Covered with pine and birch trees, Naumki Hillfort was once artificially fortified. Traces of defensive ditches and embankments can still be seen at its northern end.
Today, the Zilupe Ancient Valley is also home to the Zilupe Horse Breeding Farm.
