Ruins of Ludza Medieval Castle

In 1399 German crusaders built a powerful fortress on the hill between Small and Big Lakes of Ludza. The three-storey stone building with 6 towers, 3 gates and 2 castle-fronts. The castle was built from grey stones and red bricks, decorated with black glazed bricks. The castle-hill is one of the favourite walking places in the town, there is a splendid view over the town from the hill. Of course, there are several beautiful legends about the castle, its prince and bewitched princess.

The castle ruins have been improved – a viewing platform has been created, a pedestrian bridge has been improved and the castle walls are illuminated during the dark hours of the day for the convenience of visitors.
