Another attractive spot has been created in Ludza at the foot of the castle mound – an illuminated pedestrian street, or the Great Lake Shore Promenade, stretches along the Great Ludza Lake. The newly built promenade extends along the entire length of Lielā Ezerkrasta Street.
A modern and multifunctional waterfront area has been created, where Ludza’s historic urban environment is combined with contemporary design and landscaping solutions. The step-like amphitheater by the lake is designed for enjoying the scenery, gathering together, and hosting various events, while the benches and fountains located in the squares invite visitors to linger and enjoy the proximity of the lake.
The paths and benches right at the foot of the castle mound harmonize with the previously illuminated castle ruins. Additionally, a special boat-launching area has been built for anglers. Pedestrian paths have been constructed, LED lighting has been installed, lighting elements have been built into the benches, video surveillance systems have been set up, multiple recreation areas and pergolas have been created, and bicycle racks have been installed.
The project “Construction of the Great Lake Shore Promenade and Improvement of the Lake Embankment,” implemented by the Ludza Municipality, has received the highest recognition in two significant professional competitions: “Latvian Construction Award 2025” (Gada labākā būve Latvijā 2025) and the international Baltic-scale competition “Sustainability in Architecture, Construction, Design 2026”. The project was awarded 1st place in both competitions.
