In the village of Pasiene, close to Latvia\u2019s eastern border, Vit\u0101lijs Me\u017eeckis has created a private collection in his home, inviting visitors to reflect on the importance of their roots, family heritage and native place.<\/p>\n

Inspired by a strong sense of patriotism, Vit\u0101lijs has created a wide variety of works: wood carvings, paintings, architectural models made from matchsticks, and mosaics crafted from many different materials.<\/p>\n

The collection includes Latvian traditional symbols, representations of the tree as a bridge between the past and the future, churches, landscapes and portraits, as well as the Latvian national anthem presented in a framed artistic composition. Each work has its own story, and the artist is happy to explain the meaning and message behind it.<\/p>\n

Living in a rural area so close to the national border gives particular significance to an awareness of one\u2019s roots, responsibilities, values and future.<\/p>\n
